Presenting The All-Star Titans! by Gwhitmore Presenting The All-Star Titans! by Gwhitmore
An idea from paula-ranor about a Golden Age Teen Titans. Here's the result. Although she initially wanted six heroes-- Robin, Dan the Dyna-Mite, Wing, Sandy the Golden Boy, Speedy and an original character called Dark Girl (a protégée of the Phantom Lady with a reversed color scheme) -- once I decided on this cover, I needed a seventh to provide balance, so I added Mary Marvel.

Robin art by Bob Kane

Mary Marvel art by Jack Binder

Sandy art by Jack Kirby

Speedy art by Eric Shanower

Dan the Dyna-Mite by Romeo Tanghal

Wing art by Gene Colan

you've got a lot of really good ones in your gallery.

Have you thought of redoing the old great and or famous covers but switching the heros around. I mean Supergirl for Superman or batgirl for batman or robin. or more cross over covers? just something to think about.

Which covers did you have in mind? Like doing Superman #1 with Supergirl instead... something like that? I still do the crossover comics, but am open to suggestions...

True, but your input can spark the creativity. What cover do you consider classic? We'll start there and see where it leads.

Except I don't think Wing was a kid.  He was the Crimson's Asian valet.

Actually my interpretation is that this is Wing's son, Liu How so that Wing How, the father, can still have the hero's death we see so many times.

This is sensational. I think it was a mistake for them to age Dick Grayson from Robin the Boy Wonder to adult Nightwing. It's so strange to think that Captain Marvel and Mary Marvel, etc. (from Fawcett), Phantom Lady and Dark Girl, Plastic Man, etc. (from Quality), etc. were not DC characters in their 1940s heyday, yet they are DC in our lifetime. Yet the current DC doesn't seem to even remember any of them anymore. Classic Mary Marvel and Dark Girl should be in that teenaged DC Super Hero Girls toyline and cartoon for girls today.

Thank you very much for saying my original character Dark Girl should be in the DC Super Hero Girls series.  Let them know and if she is, I can give them her whole story.

Oh I wondered why I never heard of Dark Girl before! I assumed she was an obscure sidekick from 1940s Phantom Girl stories from Quality that I just didn't known about before. Thanks for clarifying. I see I should have read the description more, but I skimmed through it. I like the concept anyway and I still say Mary Marvel and Dark Girl should be in that teenaged DC Super Hero Girls toyline and cartoon show. I think it also should feature Wonder Girl in high school instead of Wonder Woman.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Donna should be in that show and not Diana. Or, at the very least, call her Wonder Girl.

With the exception of Jerry Ordway's Shazam series, I don't think DC ever thought that Captain Marvel & Co. were worth any effort. I certainly can't get used to Billy Batson being called Shazam. Ugh. And like you I think there is tons of potential for all of these characters in all of their interpretations. (Although watching Dick Grayson grow up and mature into a new role is a highlight of my comic reading, so I'm in the fence about that one.) Thanks for the comment and the like. Do you have a suggestion of a cover you'd like to see?

Paul Dini/Alex Ross' Shazam: Power of Hope was great. Jerry Ordway's Power of Shazam was pretty good. That's about it. The Shazam Archive was even abandoned. DC kept portraying Captain Marvel as Superman's enemy just because Captain Marvel's former publisher was sued by DC in the 1940s. It makes no sense for those two superheroes to be at odds, personality wise, they should be good friends. The New 52 and Rebirth reboots and the Injustice series are the biggest disgraces I've seen yet. For the sake of my blood-pressure I have to avoid the majority of what Dan DiDio and Jim Lee approves.

I'd love to see Jerry Ordway, Steve Rude and Alex Ross in charge of DC and do a Retro reboot back to Golden Age roots for Jerry Siegel style Superman, Bill Parker style Captain Marvel, Bill Finger style Batman and Robin, etc. and Silver Age roots for the Justice League of America, Hal Jordan Green Lantern, Barry Allen Flash, the Question, Blue Beetle, etc. Also Bronze Age Denny O'Neil/Neal Adams Green Arrow and John Stewart Green Lantern, Jack Kirby Demon, Wein/Wrightson Swamp Thing, Wolfman/Perez New Teen Titans etc. 1980s Guy Gardner I'd like to see restored and clash with Green Arrow. Each character back to their basic roots from their glory years, but blending each age together. But not rebooting the origins and first appearances, just refer to the back issues and reprints. I think the original early stories by the creators should be kept intact as having happened and used as the instruction guide for how to write them.

I think Dick Grayson growing from Robin to Nightwing in Marv Wolfman/George Perez's New Teen Titans should have been a story arc treated like the Frank Miller Dark Knight Returns thing was for Batman with Carrie Kelley as Robin. And like Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons' Watchmen was. Like Mark Waid/Alex Ross' Kingdom Come. An elseworld or parallel Earth sort of thing. Just not the mainstream standard DC Universe cannon.

For a suggestion of a crossover cover I have an idea I'll like to see of Miracleman art by Alan Davis from the Mircleman #1 (1985) cover placed in the  cover of Master Comics #23 (1942) with Captain Marvel and the wizard Shazam art by Mac Raboy, replacing the introduction of Captain Marvel Jr. with Miracleman. But calling him Marvelman as he originally was named in England.
"In this issue! Marvelman. Sensational New Marvel, Smashing His Way to the Top!" I think that would be neat.

Ah, I'd forgotten about Alex Ross' Shazam's Power of Hope as well as the Big Red Cheese's version in Kingdom Come. Thanks for the reminder. Both I thought were great uses of Captain Marvel.

Interesting idea about the cover. Hmmm....

Glad you like it. Ironically, the hardest part was the color reversal on Dark Girl-- I had to do it all manually. And I hope you don't mind that I gave her goggles. I always liked the original's goggles!

Right the Young Allies. I suggested to paula-ranor that maybe Bucky and Toro should be on this cover, but I found I liked her choices better. Good call!

yeah, i like this better.  since bucky and toro did actually have their own team comic, i like this being strictly dc heroes (and one fawcett).

Exactly. I poked around some of my resources to find a super powered DC teen girl from the Golden Age but came up empty. Sometimes, it's all about artistic license, which I use and abuse with great joy. :)
